History of Formation and Development: An Intersection of Legend and History
The legend of Tao Sach Pagoda is associated with Prince Uy Linh Lang, the seventh son of King Tran Nhan Tong. According to the books "Tây Hồ chí" and "Thăng Long cổ tích khảo", the shrine dedicated to Uy Linh Lang was built on the site where the pagoda stands today. At the beginning of the Le Dynasty, the villagers built a pagoda on the foundation of the shrine and named it Tao Sach.
In the 16th century, Zen Master Thủy Nguyệt, whose dharma name was Tông Giác, returned from studying in China and brought with him the Tào Động Zen sect. He taught his disciples, who became the abbots of pagodas around West Lake. Tao Sach Pagoda at this time became a center for the Hoa Nghiêm Association, which used the Hoa Nghiêm Sutra as its guiding principle, aiming to liberate the souls of deceased relatives of the association's members.
